New Policy Analyst Joins the Interagency Secretariat on Research Ethics

Ottawa, ON (January 8, 2010) - Susan Zimmerman, Executive Director of the Interagency Secretariat on Research Ethics (SRE), is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Policy Analyst to the Interagency Secretariat on Research Ethics.

Dr. Laura-Lee Balkwill most recently held the position of Ethics Education and Compliance Advisor at Queen’s University, where she was responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, online tutorial on research ethics. She analyzed international research ethics policies and guidelines for the purpose of creating a complete set of standard operating policies and procedures for various research ethics boards at Queen’s. She also designed a training program to assist researchers in bringing their laboratories into compliance with ethics regulations.

Dr. Balkwill’s appointment was effective January 4, 2010.

The role of Policy Analyst was created to advise and collaborate with members of the Interagency Panel on Research Ethics on the development of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS). The TCPS is a joint initiative of the three Canadian research agencies – the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research (SSHRC). The TCPS sets out basic principles and processes for human research ethics for those institutions receiving Agency funding.
