Tutorial: Ethical Conduct of Research involving Humans: Section 5: Inclusion in Research

Research Involving Those Who Are Incompetent to Consent for Themselves

Individuals such as children, adults with cognitive impairments, and unconscious patients are usually given special protection from the risks associated with participating in research. Although researchers must protect vulnerable persons, research may provide benefits to these individuals. The TCPS requires that those who are not competent to consent for themselves should not be automatically excluded from research that may be potentially beneficial to them as individuals, or to the group to which they belong.
