TCPS 2 (2022) – Acknowledgements

This revised version of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2022) is the fruit of many contributions and invaluable collaborative efforts by members of the Canadian research community. We are thrilled to present this new version of the TCPS 2, which includes significant changes that we believe will make it easier for REBs to review research projects and help meet the evolving needs of the research community.

The research ethics themes that were part of the public consultation, and the final revisions, represent the culmination of several years of deliberations and consultation by the Panel on Research Ethics (PRE) and ad hoc subcommittees, with input from Agency staff as appropriate. We want to thank our colleagues on PRE who contributed their time and expertise to bring you this new and improved version of TCPS 2. We are also grateful to the members of the public who provided feedback and shared their experiences and knowledge.

This endeavour would not have been possible without input from the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research (Secretariat). The Secretariat's invaluable support throughout the process helped PRE contextualize concerns articulated by the research community—both in terms of the Canadian research environment and the bioethics literature at large—and ensure that they were addressed by the revisions to the TCPS 2. We wish to acknowledge that significant time and thought has gone into efforts beyond these updates to the TCPS 2. Past and present members of PRE and the Secretariat also carried out public consultations, provided interpretations of the guidance—including regarding the pandemic (COVID-19)—revamped the Course on Research Ethics (CORE-2022), presented at national meetings and conferences, and spent countless hours in fulfilling their responsibilities. All of these efforts serve to inform and strengthen the revisions and the responsible conduct of human research in Canada. For all of these contributions, we are extremely grateful.
